Ronald Koeman has signed a one-year deal to succeed Mario Been as Feyenoord coach.

Koeman, 48, returns to the Rotterdam team where he made over 50 appearances as a player, and where brother Erwin was at the helm between 2005 and 2007. "We can spring a surprise this season – there is a lot of quality and talent in this young squad," said Koeman, whose new charges finished tenth in last season's Dutch Eredivisie. His predecessor Been left the club on 13 July.

"Together with the players and whole club I share a burning ambition to show we are able to do a lot more than we have in the recent past," continued the coach, who now has the distinction of having played for and managed each of AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord.

Koeman, who earned 78 Netherlands caps and was a member of his country's EURO '88-winning side, also counts Vitesse, SL Benfica, Valencia CF and AZ Alkmaar among his former coaching posts. Ex-Feyenoord players Jean-Paul van Gastel and Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be his assistants.
