A country's representation in the UEFA Champions League is determined by its UEFA coefficient ranking at the start of the previous season, which is calculated over a five-year basis. Twenty-two teams automatically enter this season's competition in the group stage (including Manchester United as UEFA Europa League winners), with a further 57 teams taking part in qualifying.

Headline figures

  • Real Madrid will attempt to become the first team to win three European Cups in a row since Bayern München in 1974–76.
  • England has five representatives, including four starting in the group stage, as Manchester United won the UEFA Europa League but finished outside the Premier League's top four.
  • RB Leipzig will make their UEFA Champions League debut in the group phase.
  • Other debutants: Hoffenheim, Vitorul, İstanbul Başakşehir, Kukës, IFK Mariehamn, Spartaks Jūrmala, Samtredia, FCI Tallinn, Europa and Trepça '89, the first entrants from Kosovo.
