FC Barcelona's victory at Wembley was their fourth European Champion Clubs' Cup triumph – bettered only by Real Madrid CF, AC Milan and Liverpool FC – and made Spain the most successful country in the competition's history.

Barcelona's 3-1 win moved them alongside AFC Ajax and FC Bayern München on four European titles, one more than last year's champions FC Internazionale Milano and Manchester United FC, the runners-up tonight. Real Madrid remain the European Cup's most successful side with nine triumphs, the most recent in 2002, with Milan next on seven and Liverpool on five.

Barcelona's crowns have all come in the last 20 years, their first at Wembley in 1992 after final defeats in 1961 and 1986. Although they experienced more final disappointment in 1994, they were also victorious in Paris in 2006 and against United in Rome two years ago.

Their success also means that Spain now have 13 European titles – all won by Barcelona and Madrid – one more than Italy. England are in third position on 11 competition triumphs.
